Your mind’s not weak. It’s just untrained
Jun 11, 2025I’m The Real Jason Duncan, back with your Beyond the Grind blog–helping entrepreneurs like you build thriving businesses without sacrificing your freedom. 🚀
If you're anything like the entrepreneurs I coach, you're either hitting your stride–or feeling the drag of mental fatigue.
That is a perfect time for a reset.
Not a vacation. Not a sabbatical.
A mental reset.
Because when your mind isn’t strong, your strategy won’t matter.
Let me tell you what changed that for me.
The Day the Weights Didn’t Get Lighter
Some time ago I started working with dumbbells as part of my morning workouts.
All I had was a set of 30-lb dumbbells.
I struggled, but I was able to curl one at a time.
Fast-forward 18 months, and now I can curl both in several sets and I’m considering buying heavier ones.
Here’s what I realized:
The weights didn’t get lighter. I got stronger.
That’s how mindset works.
The challenges you’re facing in your business right now?
They don’t magically go away when you “work on yourself.”
They just stop crushing you–because you’ve built the strength to carry them.
That’s mental toughness. And like physical strength, it’s built through structure, repetition, and intention.
But let me be clear:
If you’ve struggled to stay disciplined with morning routines, or felt like a failure for not following someone else’s structure–you’re not broken.
You might just be wired for rhythm, not routine.
Rhythm vs. Routine: Which One Builds You Up?
I’ve written before about the difference between rhythms and routines.
If you’ve ever felt guilty because you couldn’t stick to someone else’s 5 a.m. blueprint–you’ll want to hear this.
Routines are rigid. Wake up at this time. Eat that. Do this.
Some people thrive that way.
But if that kind of structure makes you feel boxed in instead of built up, it’s time to reframe.
Rhythms are fluid. They give your life a beat–not a cage.
Like music, they move you forward without locking you down.
Routines work for some. But for many of us, rhythms work better.
You don’t need someone else’s structure.
You need a rhythm that strengthens your own mindset.
And it turns out, that rhythm is built on simple, repeatable habits.
3 Rhythms (and Habits) That Build Mental Toughness
✓ 1. Morning Calibration
Start your day with clarity–not chaos.
Before you check your phone, check in with yourself. Here’s a rhythm to follow–and some micro-habits that reinforce it:
-
Silence or prayer (even 2 minutes resets your nervous system)
-
Stretch or walk (get your blood moving and body online)
-
Write down one focus for the day
-
Speak a personal affirmation or scripture aloud
These aren’t checkboxes. They’re tiny strength reps.
Done consistently, they rewire how your mind reacts under pressure.
Personally, I advise that you do not engage on social media, text messages, or anything like that on your phone or computer for at least 30-45 minutes after waking.
I promise this rhythm will get easier over time, even if you struggle to not check your phone first thing in the morning.
✓ 2. The Evening Reset
I saw a video recently that made me think. The guy in the video said: “Everyone has an alarm to wake up. Almost nobody sets one to go to bed.”
That stuck with me.
Because most entrepreneurs over-prioritize the morning… and treat the evening like a junk drawer.
But science backs this up:
Evening routines have been linked to deeper sleep, better emotional regulation, and sharper decision-making the next day. (Source: NIH, Sleep Foundation)
Here’s a rhythm to adopt–and the habits that anchor it:
-
Set a “shutdown alarm” 60 minutes before bed
-
Power down screens 30 minutes out
-
Write down one win from the day
-
Visualize tomorrow’s #1 priority
Mental clarity starts at night.
Strong mornings start the night before.
✓ 3. The Weekly Rhythm Check
Every Sunday night (or Monday morning), block 30–60 minutes for this simple rhythm:
Ask yourself:
-
“Where was I reactive this week?”
-
“Where did I feel strong or scattered?”
-
“What rhythm or habit do I need to reinforce?”
Use this time to adjust–not judge.
One habit to build mental strength fast: Pick one focus for the week and track it daily. Sticky note. Notebook. Doesn’t matter–just track it.
Toughness isn’t built in loud moments.
It’s built in the quiet ones that no one sees.
Final Thought: Stack Simple Habits for Big Wins
Mental toughness doesn’t require heroic willpower.
It’s not about never breaking. It’s about building tiny reinforcements that hold when the pressure hits.
Here are a few small habits that build mental resilience fast:
-
Drink 20oz of water first thing every morning
-
Take a 10-minute walk after lunch
-
Text a word of encouragement to someone daily
-
Write down one thing you’re grateful for every night
Each one is a rep. Each one rewires how you face pressure.
Mental toughness doesn’t show up when it’s easy.
It’s trained in the hidden seasons–when nobody’s watching.
What’s Coming Next
Next, I’m talking about setbacks–specifically, how to bounce back with a growth mindset instead of staying stuck.
Because if you're leading a real business, things will go wrong.
But how you respond is what separates the grinders from the greats.
Until then…
Go beyond the grind,
