What happens when founders stop going it alone
Jul 23, 2025I’m The Real Jason Duncan, back with another Beyond the Grind blog – helping entrepreneurs like you build thriving businesses without sacrificing your freedom. 🚀
At one point, I packed up for something I had looked forward to all year: a two-week backcountry motorcycle adventure through Colorado’s rugged terrain.
It’s a ride called the Colorado BDR – and it’s completely off-grid.
No cell service.
No Zoom.
No inbox.
Just me, three friends, and over 700 miles of dirt roads and high mountain passes.
And here’s why I’m telling you this:
I was only able to do it because I’ve built my life and business to allow it. That wasn’t always true. It took systems, delegation, and intentional design.
And I believe every founder should be able to say the same.
Not necessarily about a motorcycle trip – but about having the margin to step away when they choose to.
That’s what this post is about.
It’s not about exiting your business.
It’s about preparing for freedom – long before the exit.
Let’s talk about what that looks like in real life.
What Freedom Looks Like in Progress
Sometimes the clearest way to explain what we do inside The Exiter Club… is to show you.
Because not every member is selling tomorrow. Not every member wants to walk away.
But every member wants a business that runs better, grows stronger, and gives them back more of what they signed up for in the first place.
Here are two real wins from members who are doing just that:
“I went from making excuses on sales prospecting to approaching anybody online without fear of rejection…My follow-up has tripled as well because of advice I got on a hot seat.”
– Don Sevcik, Founder of MathCelebrity.ai
You read that right. Tripled.
Don’s not preparing to exit right now – he’s preparing to scale so he can sell at the highest multiple possible when the time is right.
But what changed wasn’t just a tactic. It was his mindset.
By facing his own friction around sales, he became a more effective leader – and built momentum that compounds.
Sometimes, that’s the real win: becoming the version of yourself your business actually needs.
“We have a better understanding of how our business value is determined and what can be done to improve it…We’re delegating day-to-day tasks, focusing on growth work, and getting closer to our goal of selling.”
– Duane & Cathy Tinsley, Founders of Simply Computer Software, Inc.
This is what intentional design looks like.
The Tinsleys aren’t just grinding. They’re grinding on the right things.
They’re using mindset shifts, operational strategies, and expert connections to position their business for real acquisition conversations.
They’ve gone from overwhelmed to organized – from doing it all to leading through leverage.
And that’s the shift most founders never make.
This Isn’t About Exiting (At Least, Not Yet)
Let me be clear: The Exiter Club isn’t just for founders who are trying to sell.
It’s for founders who are ready to stop being the bottleneck.
It’s for the ones who want more than a glorified job.
The ones who are tired of being essential for things to function.
The ones who know their business could be so much more – if they’d stop holding it together with sheer willpower.
Yes, we talk about exits.
But long before we talk about buyers, we talk about structure.
About systems.
About transferability.
About freedom.
Because here’s the truth:
A business that’s sellable is also a business that’s livable.
You don’t have to be burned out to benefit. You just have to be honest.
If your team still leans on you for every decision…
If your calendar is full of stuff only you can do…
If your business is “successful” but you still feel stuck…
You don’t need an exit.
You need an upgrade.
👉 Want help building a business that doesn’t rely on you to function?
That’s what The Exiter Club is all about.
A Personal Note About the Ride
As I mentioned earlier, that off-road motorcycle trip took me and three good friends through the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route (COBDR) – a rugged trail through some of the most beautiful and remote terrain in the Rockies.
No laptops. No Signal messages. No client calls.
Just dirt roads, deep conversations, and a whole lot of elevation.
While we didn’t have service for most of the trail, I shared photos and short video updates whenever we rolled into town for supplies.

It’s the kind of thing I couldn’t have done a few years ago.
Back then, I was the engine.
If I left for two days, things broke.
The idea of leaving for two weeks – completely unplugged – was laughable.
But this trip?
It’s proof that what we’re building inside The Exiter Club works.
You don’t need to sell your business tomorrow.
You just need to build it in a way that doesn’t break when you finally decide to live your life again.
That’s the real win.
🔁 If you're ready to stop grinding and start designing a scalable, optional business – The Exiter Club can help you get there.
Words of Wisdom
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” – Proverbs 16:3
You don’t have to build alone.
You don’t have to grind without guidance.
When you align your actions with a greater purpose and surround yourself with the right people, clarity follows.
And the path forward becomes far more solid than the one you walk by instinct alone.
Go beyond the grind,
The Real Jason Duncan 🚀
