You’re not coachable if you do this
Jun 25, 2025I’m The Real Jason Duncan, back with your Beyond the Grind blog–helping entrepreneurs like you build thriving businesses without sacrificing your freedom. 🚀
This post will wrap up our four-part series on mindset.
We’ve talked about thought filters, mental toughness, and bouncing back after setbacks.
But now, we’re ending with the one thing that can accelerate (or completely stall) every mindset shift:
Community.
And just as importantly–your posture inside that community.
When Proximity Isn’t Enough
A while ago, I met a health and fitness entrepreneur through a business group we both joined. He had access to a solid network, live events, private calls, peer groups–the whole deal.
But he never showed up.
Didn’t ask questions.
Didn’t engage.
Didn’t grow.
Didn't take action.
Then he told me it “wasn’t providing value.”
Fast forward to just a few months ago. We reconnected on social media and I asked how business was going.
He said he was finally getting things on track and hoped to exit in the next three years.
So I told him about The Exiter Club–how it’s built for entrepreneurs just like him:
✓ Focused on maximizing business valuation
✓ Surrounded by experts and peers
✓ Designed to help you exit without chaos
And I asked, “Is that something you’d find valuable?”
He just replied, “Nah, I’m good.”
It hit me in that moment: He didn’t need access to a better community. He needed a better mindset.
The Most Dangerous Mindset: I’ve Got This Alone
We love the idea of rugged individualism. But in entrepreneurship? That’s a liability.
Isolation warps your thinking.
It makes you believe you’re the only one struggling.
It makes you feel like asking for help is a weakness.
It keeps you from accessing the very insights that would move you forward faster.
If you want to build a scalable business and a resilient mindset, you need other people in the room with you–people who won’t let you coast, hide, or stay small.
But just showing up isn’t enough.
Community Can’t Change You if You’re Not Coachable
The right room can’t help you if you:
-
Always explain your way out of feedback
-
Never ask for input
-
Stay guarded because you’re afraid to look weak
The people I’ve seen make the biggest leaps inside The Exiter Club?
They’re not always the flashiest.
They’re the most coachable.
They show up.
They ask questions.
They take notes.
They do the work.
And they come back the next month having applied what they learned.
That’s how you use community to expand your mindset–and your results.
The Growth Mindset Needs Reinforcement
Carol Dweck’s concept of a growth mindset isn’t just about believing you can change.
It’s about putting yourself in an environment where change is required–and choosing to embrace it.
You can’t do that in isolation.
You need:
-
Mirrors
-
Mentors
-
Challengers
-
Encouragers
The mindset of growth is humble. It’s hungry. And it’s willing to be sharpened by others.
3 Mindset Shifts That Unlock Growth in Community
1. I don’t need to be the smartest–I need to be the most teachable
If you already knew what to do, you’d already be doing it. Growth begins with admission.
2. I’m better when I’m challenged
The right people will confront you–not to hurt you, but to call you up. That only works if your ego’s not in the way.
3. I won’t grow if I hide
No one can help the version of you you’re pretending to be. If you want real growth, show up honestly.
The mindset you need next is probably living in someone else’s mouth.
But you have to be close enough–and open enough–to hear it.
👥 The Room That Will Stretch You
If this mindset series has resonated with you–if you’ve felt the need to refocus, get clear, and lead with less weight–it’s time to change your environment.
Because better inputs create better thinking.
And better thinking creates better outcomes.
That’s what happens inside The Exiter Club.
If you’re ready to surround yourself with the kind of community that challenges your thinking and elevates your game…
